Dr. William M. Gaugler

William M. Gaugler is Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology and Director of the Fencing Masters Program at San Jose State University, California, the only university in the United States offering training and certification for fencing teachers.
Dr. Gaugler was a pupil of Maestro Aldo Nadi, Italian Professional Champion, Maestro Umberto Di Paola, Director of the Fencing Masters Preparatory Course at the National Institute of Physical Education in Rome, and Maestro Giorgio Pessina, President of the Italian Fencing Masters Association, of which Dr. Gaugler is an full member. He holds a fencing master's diploma from the Accademia Nazionale di Scherma in Naples, Italy.
In 1997, Maestro Gaugler was elected Honarary member of the Associazione Italiana Maestri di Scherma, and in 2005 was elected Honoraty member of the Accademia nazionale di Scherma, Naples.
Dr. Gaugler is author of The Science of Fencing, a comprehensive exposition of the Italian systems of foil, sabre and épée, The History of Fencing, and A Dictionary of Universally Used Fencing Terminology.
